It’s official, both of the on air personalities of Radio Redhead will be in attendance at this year’s Gnomedex. There was some question of scheduling and previous responsibilities but it all worked out in the end. For Josh, this will be Gnomedex number four. It will also be repeat performance for Trixie. The dynamic duo will be podcasting ‘live to the hard drive’ from the conference floor. And thanks to some wise provisioning from Chris Pirillo dead laptop batteries shant be in effect. We’ll have to get the Green Robe Industry table schwag ready for these two wonders. We’ll see you in Seattle!
What has Gnomedex been in the past?
Gnomedex was born in 2001, carefully crafted by the hands of Lori Lockwood and Jake Ludington. It was supposed to take place on September 14th & 15th, 2001 in Des Moines, Iowa. These were ill-fated days, as nobody could have predicted the catastrophic event that would befall us mere days before. Still, in the eleventh hour, our coordinators were able to reschedule the proceedings a month later - and it was a complete success. The original plans changed a bit, but 350 tech enthusiasts had a great time. Speakers included Steve Gibson, Robert Scoble, and David Lawrence.
The second year was definitely a lot more relaxed; a true culture started to form around it. Even Worldcom gave us a thumbs up. Wi-Fi flew through the air, but not with the greatest of ease. Even so, tech enthusiasts had a great time. Speakers included Leo Laporte, Evan Williams, Pud Kaplan, Beth Goza, and Doc Searls.
Then, just when we were ready to forget about pulling off a trifecta, one of our past Banner sponsors approached us once again with the hope that we would assemble in the Midwest at least one more time - for III. And so, we did. And there was much rejoicing. We finally got a bit of formal recognition from the local press and government - in the form of front-page Business Page coverage in the Des Moines Register, and a full-on proclamation from the city. Again, tech enthusiasts had a great time. Are you sensing a pattern here? Speakers included John C. Dvorak, Tim O'Reilly, cmdrtaco, and Dan Gillmor.
Last year, Gnomedex became 2004's Premier Internet Publishing Event. Yahoo! was our lead sponsor, with Microsoft, PayPal, and Google also showing a grand level of support. The event was held in the remote location of Lake Tahoe, and several hundred tech enthusiasts turned out to show their support. Speakers included Robert Scoble, Nick Bradbury, Jason Shellen, Wil Wheaton, Jim Louderback, Anil Dash, Steve Gillmor, Dan Gillmor, Jason Calacanis, and Steve "Woz" Wozniak.
Now, in 2005, we've brought this industry-favorite to Seattle.
